Sand & Sun, Here We Come

The season has arrived when many Canadians start to think of or are in the planning stages of departing for a winter vacation. There can be many things to remember from bringing the right clothing for the trip to exchanging currency. One thing that you should always have on your planning list is preparing your property for your trip away.

Whether you're going out of town for two days or a few weeks, there are things you can do to prepare your home for your absence and for your smooth return.  It can be difficult to remember from trip to trip everything you need to do to get your house in order so having a checklist of what needs to be done, and starting to plan a week or two in advance can be to your advantage.

Here is a top 10 checklist that can make it easier for you to get your home ready for your departure and return so you can enjoy a vacation free from worries and will ease your transition back to reality when you return.

Prepare for Your Departure:

1.  Ready your pets

Give the pet sitter detailed care instructions and contact numbers should they need them. Make sure you provide plenty of your pet's favorite foods, treats, toys, medicines and other supplies they may require.

2.  Clean out the fridge

Throw away food that will expire while you're gone so you don't have any surprises when you arrive back.

3.  Tackle the laundry

Wash and put away laundry before you leave as you will come back with loads of new laundry from your trip.

4.  Prep your plants

Ask a friend or neighbor to water your plants or invest in self-watering plant stakes.

5.  Leave a light on

During a short trip, leave a few lamps on throughout the house to make it look occupied. For a longer vacation, it could be wise to invest in inexpensive automatic timers that can turn lights on and off at staggered intervals, making your house look occupied. If you are setup, alert your home-security service or if not, a trusted neighbor can also keep an eye out as well.

6.  Adjust the thermostat

Temporality adjust the thermostat so the heater won't waste energy by running in an empty house. There are many thermostats in the market where you can program the temperatures you'd like or even put the temps on vacation mode. Unplug unnecessary appliances in preparation for your absence.

7.   Hold mail and newspapers

A call to your post office and news carrier will put your mail and newspapers on hold so they won't pile up in front of your house while you're gone.

In Preparation for Your Return:

8.  Plan for your breakfast

Before you leave, stock your kitchen with cold cereal, coffee and a container of shelf-stable milk so your first meal back will be hassle free. Or even better, prepare a meal that you can freeze and microwave when you return so it is  quick & doesn't require a lot of dishes to prepare.

9.  Change the sheets

Make up beds with fresh sheets for a welcoming first night.

10.  Tidy the house

Take the time to sweep or vacuum floors, do the dishes, wipe down counters in the bathroom and kitchen as you will appreciate this when you walk in the door after being away.

So enjoy your holidays and don't forget the sunscreen!
